THIS IS A REPEAT MESSAGE, with an UPDATE on the (record LOW) exchange rate
of the AUSSIE dollar. The price of AUD 80 (incl. MAILFAST postage) is now
worth 41 USD, 29 pounds sterling, 314 FF, 94 DM

"Billion-year earth history of Australia & neighbours in Gondwanaland"
(BYEHA)
ISBN 1-876315-04-0 Edited by J.J. Veevers, published by GEMOC Press, 2000,
400 p., flexicover. International: AUD 80 incl. MAILFAST postage.
              Further details at http://www.es.mq.edu.au/GEMOC/BYEHA/page1.htm

We have published BYEHA ourselves in an attempt to provide geologists
with a research monograph at cost without the enormous overheads of
multinational publishers. The price (incl. postage) of 11 US cents per
page, 5 to 10 times cheaper than commercial equivalents, is now possible
thanks to the WEB and e-mail, AND (we hope) by fellow geologists (and
departmental libraries) supporting this independent publishing by buying
the book.
Reviews in print and press are uniformly favourable. From JOHN
CROWELL'S review for GEOTIMES: "This remarkable and useful book summarizes
the geologic history of a significant part of the Earth's continental crust
and its changing settings throughout geologic time since the beginning of
the Neoproterozoic …… Huge amounts of data are presented in Veevers'
trademark 'time-space diagrams' and skilfully designed maps and diagrams.
The soft-cover book is beautifully produced and printed on high-quality
paper, and is a bargain these days at about US$ 54 [NOW US$ 41] shipped ……
Veevers summarizes his "tectonic-climate model" to explain continental
clustering followed by continental dispersal ….. In short, the book should
be within easy reach of all interested in the long history of our planet."
From P.R. EVANS in THE AUSTRALIAN GEOLOGIST: "In BYEHA Veevers and
colleagues present a cohesive theory and the underlying evidence for the
evolution of the earth's crust during the last billion years ....... as a
compilation of up-dated studies and theory of crustal evolution, BYEHA is a
tremendous resource that brings together results otherwise scattered
through the scientific literature ....... Suess, who conceived of Gondwana
(or Gondwanaland) as a great southern continent and Wegener who conceived
of Pang(a)ea would be astounded and surely proud of the support that is now
available for their hypotheses that is distilled into BYEHA."
From A.J. Crawford's review for EPISODES: "This is an awesome volume
in terms of breadth of the material drawn together. As a resource for
checking information on the timing, distribution, and nature of tectonic
events, lithostratigraphic units and facies, and their interpretation, this
book is a gold mine ....... I learned many new things, and had the
opportunity to rethink in another light aspects of rock sequences and
regions that I consider I know well ....... The publishers, the
contributors, and especially John Veevers, all deserve immense credit for
this remarkable volume, which for me will be the single most useful book on
Australian post-1 Ga geological evolution of eastern Gondwanaland - an
exceptional achievement."
From Nick Mortimer's review in GEOL SOC NZ NEWSLETTER 123, Nov 2000:
".....I was thoroughly engrossed by the plethora of thematic
paleogeographic maps and event stratigraphy diagrams: terrifyingly
impressive in their depth, breadth and number .......... Does the book
live up to its ambitious title? In the main, yes. I strongly recommend it
to anyone who wants a one-stop, up-to-date reference work on the geology of
Australia and its erstwhile neighbours."

Students, young and old, of Pangean and Gondwanaland tectonics and
environments will find much of interest in BYEHA, and will want their own
copy. Please post a print of this message on your institutional notice
board and recommend that the library get a copy or two for general reading.
