Plainly a slightly corrupt passage, but I would guess that the copyist has
permitted himself at least one erroneous expansion. The archetype surely
would resemble "sato tam ato salato" -- my poor Latin would have this as
"sown, he says, nevertheless, [upon?] the open sea". Perhaps the next time
we visit M&S, we should go armed with Capelli? More of a Kwiksave chap
myself, and rather baffling when de-contextualised (myself as well as the
inscription). Was there anything to suggest a terminus ante quem?
