Dear Oriens,
Others have said it but I enthusiastically agree - you are a lucky man
to serve in such a lovely spot.
And what a penance to have to visit the villages along the north side of
the Vale of Pickering with their historic churches. Jim Bugslag is right
to guide you to Pev for descriptions of the fabric and fittings but the
Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian sculpture in Ryedale and the Vale is
best served by turning to a copy of the late and much-missed Jim Lang's
fine volume in the British Academy Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture
series: York and Eastern Yorkshire. To buy this will take a lot of your
stipend but you might decide to add it to the relic cupboard.
Best wishes
Ross Jellicoe
