NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT
Joanne Maria McNally,
Creative Misbehaviour: The Use of German Kabarett within
Advanced Foreign Language Learning Classrooms, Peter Lang,
2000 (Cultural and Linguistic Studies, vol. 6, ed. Peter Lutzeier)
ISBN: 3-906758-82-6
This book spans literary and linguistic study, with the pedagogic
aim of integrating the two on the basis of some diverse and in part
challenging material associated with the cultural genre 'Kabarett'.
'Creative Misbehaviour' is proposed as both a conception for the
operation of 'Kabarett' and an approach to language learning. Major
sections of the work combine generality and precise reference to a
range of relevant 'Kabarett' texts from different periods, some
contemporary. Internal, intertextual and contextual aspects of
'Kabarett' material are explored, and features which could be
usefully exploited in teaching, as well as the inherent desiderata
and potential difficulties, are highlighted. The book refers to findings
from related disciplines (e.g. psychology) in order to focus on
'bisociation' as a core characteristic of 'Kabarett' and to develop a
theoretical framework for analysing 'Kabarett'. This theoretical
framework is the basis for the planning of 'Kabarett'-based courses
in German as a foreign language. Other relevant features are the
description and documentation of a pilot 'Kabarett' project, and a set
of detailed teaching-learning schedules for a proposed course. By
investigating the use of German 'Kabarett' within advanced foreign
language learning classrooms, this book has moved into a relatively
new field of research. Many of the findings will be of relevance to the
use of English satirical texts in language learning contexts.
