Hi Phillip and folks
I have seen personal portfolios used in a Community Access Service in
Newcastle NSW. I will try to find a contact number or email if you are
interested in following up. This folio is in the form of a manual which the
service users create themselves using the agencies computer and any needed
assistance from staff.
I saw examples at a workshop that was held to show people from other
agencies how they were done and their uses. Permission was granted of
course. The one I recall seeing was from a woman with cerebral palsy who
used a wheelchair and obviously could not verbally communicate. She had
different sections in it that would be useful for different people
including a confidential section which was only to be seen by people with
expressed permission (which did not include us). As an example of content,
she had photos of herself being assisted into and out of a car with a
heading "This is how I like to get in and out of a car". I thought it was
a great idea, particularly as it was owned by the individual. There will
obviously be issues of privacy, confidentiality etc and perhaps we would
need to be careful of people referring to a folio rather than the person.
Overall it seemed to better than other approaches to documentation.
