psychoanalytic critics addressed this question of verb tense and desire a while back. lacan, for instance, points out that desire is proleptic---it is a present moment of anticipation, and is, thus, most effectively expressed/embodied in the future perfect, a gratification that will have occurred, a satisfaction that will occur in the present but that will be recognized only retrospectively.
