Picking up from another of Chris's points:

I think that copyright and intellectual property rights are an issue but
not a great difficulty.
I'm not familiar with the issues raised by Nardi and O'Day but have for
the last couple of months been working closely with librarians and
information scientists in this area.
I'm sure that the e-library will still need to point to paper resources
& there are a wide range of internet accessible services offering
bibliographic databases and an increasing number of full text services
(at varying cost). The services being available without the geographical
& time constraints of traditional libraries.
The growth area seems to be in evaluation of Internet resources, and the
subsequent organisation of these in ways which will be meaningful to
students, teachers & researchers in particular subject areas. However,
many of the evaluation and collections policies seem to have been
written by librarians with varying involvement form the subject domains.
What do members of the list think of developments such as the Resource
Discovery Network (RDN) http://www.rdn.ac.uk part of the DNER. You can
navigate from there to resources for your own discipline or cross search
an increasing number of gateways for quality resources.
My own work is in clarifying the needs of the Nursing Midwifery and
Allied Health professions (NMAHP) and the mechanisms by which these can
be met, in conjunction with OMNI http://omni.ac.uk
As we move to more resource based discovery type learning paradigms,
access to the information base for any discipline becomes even more
important, and the e-library may be as significant to the success or
failure of elearning?
