"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 48 (Fall 2000)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Issue 48 (Fall 2000), consisting of 80 pages, including numerous
illustrated articles, was published in September 2000 and has been sent to
all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map Society.
This issue contains the summary of a study of the Luso-Hispanic World in
Maps in the collections of the Library of Congress. Also, a detailed
article that reveals the relation of 16th century Virginian cartography to
the mapping of the Pacific - a comparison of four well-known maps. Also
extensive research on the Kanawha/New River on mid-eighteenth century maps.
And a convincing and well-documented argument that Columbus made a 1477
voyage to North America. There are reviews of books that were written in
Spanish, French and English. Rodney Shirley again shares with the
cartographic community his 'Ten Key Points for Map Collectors.' And there
is more. "The Portolan" is published three times per year; issue 49 is
expected to be released in January 2001.
