Thanks, Martin, for the Daniel and the Three Children info. Our informant at
Cork showed some puzzling images of the three lads accompanied in the furnace by
a fourth figure (but not in the flames - the artists had started to add these
but stopped before completion) who seemed to prefigure the later, usual angel.
Christ was suggested.
By coincidence, a paper at Leeds this year discussed a Later Medieval prayer
book of which one of the illustrations showed a single figure in the flames of a
furnace. The text strangely identified this figure as Daniel. Not a lion in
sight, and how come the fire?
Best wishes
Graham
