Dear learned ones,
An Icelandic church, whose dedication is known from
the 13th century (but could be earlier), includes among its
patron saints St. Barbara and St. Denis of Paris. (also St.
Peter and the Virgin Mary.) I am wondering whether there
is any special reason for the appearance of Sts. Barbara
and Denis, both of whom are otherwise quite rare in
Iceland. Is anyone familiar with times or places when
either or both of these saints enjoyed special popularity?
Paris, obviously, for St. Denis, and Icelandic and Norwegian
contacts with France are well attested, but there were
also contacts with England, pilgrimages to Rome, etc.
Thanks in advance,
