A few days ago a post to the list (which I've
deleted by accident) mentioned in passing that reader
response theory had been developed with reference to
medieval texts. At least, that's what I remember it to
say, and I'd be most grateful if the poster would supply
brief details. I have the impression that a lot of
medievalists (me included) are claiming the Middle Ages,
and particularly medieval religious writing, as the origin
of many of the theories that on the face of it appear
modern, or even postmodern. But perhaps someone has
explained this development already?
