Reading saints' lives recently (Benedictine) in both the Carolingian period
and the 12th century, I have noticed that the terms "beatus" and "sanctus"
are used interchangeably (I would guess for stylistic reasons) for major
Benedictine "holy men" (though none were "canonized" formally by Rome; the
process scarcely in existence. I noticed some tendency to give the term
"sanctus" to a senior saint, particularly when juxtaposed with a disciple in
a passage.

Dear Chara,
I am working on the Latin and French lives of St Dominic (1170-1221) for my
doctoral thesis at the University of Sydney. In the Latin texts he is
referred to, inter alia, as 'beatus' or 'sanctus' but in the French
translations he is 'saint'. But when the French lives were written, Dominic
had already been canonised (1233). In the Latin text Our Lady is referred,
on the other hand, to as 'beata' and in the French text she is referred to
as either 'bieneuree Vierge' or 'Nostre Dame'.
I hope that is (belatedly) of some help.
Best wishes,
John Cochrane
