CGF members and others may be interested in contributing to the
forthcoming event:
Cultural Change and Urban Contexts
September 8-10th 2000 Manchester and Salford UK
MMU, Manchester and Salford Universities are hosting an international
conference exploring different aspects of the relationship between
culture and urban contexts. You are invited to attend or submit a
paper for the following streams:
- Urban Cultures and Cultural Industries
This theme will address issues such as: the role of culture in the
regeneration of cities; the changing nature of the cultural
industries; the role of social capital in the culture industries;
the contribution of the culture industries to urban revitalization;
and the role of culture in the generation of new forms of social
space.
- Identities Subjectivities and Cultural Practice
This theme takes as its focus the debates around identity formation,
subjectivities, regulation an dresistance in everyday life in urban
settings. These are explored within the substantive fields of
popular culture and the social construction of public and private
spaces. Issues of gender, sexuality, race and class will be central
to examining cultural practices of both production and consumption
in music and dance cultures, the visual and the performing arts.
- Lifestyles, Leisure and Consumption
Here concerns about the effects of changing lifestyles, leisure and
consumption on forms of social and cultural capital will be a
particular focus. The significance of cultural and social networks
and new forms of consumption around areas like food, music,
nightlife, shopping, housing, museums, heritage and sport
The conference fee is £100 for the full conference or £60 for a
single day. Concessions are available for students/unwaged. Please
