<Cheers on a happy Sunday morning. My perspectives, as requested by Jim
Bugslag:
(a) Your cited sources have their limitations. St. Magnus bishop of
Avignon, died (according to Cappelli's 'Cronologia' ca. 660, feast day
on Aug. 19, is the same person as S. Magnus of Anagni. He is called "of
Anagni" simply because he is venerated there.
(b) My (general) perspective: to deal with contradictory sources is all
in a day's work for any historian and must be taken in stride.
Conflicting data are like the proverbial glass of water, half full to
the optimist, but to the pessimist, half empty. There is some truth in
most traditions, and it is up to the historian to focus on what is true
or to be content with dismissing everything without a thorough
evaluation.
(c) my (particular) perspective: in the case of St. Magnus of Avignon,
it should not be too difficult to pursue documentation on both Avignon
and Lerins. Don't forget that Lerins had a 'colony' ('Colonie des
moines') at Avignon, consequently Magnus and Agricola were monks OF
Lerins, but not AT Lerins. For Lerins, I would begin with Vincent
Barralis, 'Chronologia sanctorum et aliorum virorum illustrium...', then
look at the 'Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Lerins'ed. Edmond Blanc; further
bibliography on the web under "Biographisch-Bibliographisches
Kirchenlexicon" www.bautz.de/bbkl. Barralis is not on the web, but there
is a copy on the open shelves of the Vatican Library. Lerins
traditionally attracted members of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy and was a
training ground for bishops, and this would confirm the data you cite.
St. Andrew the tribune obviously belongs to a different tradition, and
some other listmember will a perspective on that. Why St. Magnus of
Avignon should not be historical, I know not.
