Call for paper proposals for Kalamazoo 2001
Session: Apotropaism in Medieval Art
As Christianity spread throughout Europe, it rapidly established itself
as the primary venue for image production. However, within this new
context older practices, frequently pagan in origin, continued to
thrive. Much of the art produced reflects a duality of belief, a
convergence and absorption of ideas, rather than a clean break with
tradition. The papers presented will
examine the questions raised by a number of sites of such convergence,
particularly where forms and motifs are preserved to convey a
protective, apotropaic power within a new Christian context. This topic
should serve to tie together the research of scholars working in
different areas of medieval studies.
