Ah, the recognition finally dawns:
They were not yet lice after all, but angels all along, taking on the form
of lice to better do God's bidding and, doubtless in answer to our blessed
Becket's supplications, give the full effect (if you will) of the flesh's
richly deserved mortification. Once said task was completed, and Beckett's
soul floated heavenward, the tiny angellice prepared for lift-off and soared
away as part of his blissfully triumphant entourage.
There may well be somewheres in the mystic cobwebs a legend about the
blessed horse who donated the horsehair for Becket's breeches, too - - or,
lacking one, some esteemed listmember can fill the gap.
