I find myself in a strange position being half-Irish and half-English. But
since I have no truck with ad hominem arguments I'll leave that for now.
I'd find it interesting to hear what Australian women feel about the use of
the term "girls" to refer to them - or the reinscribing of the equation of
low-paid and female. It may be humour to Peter (and his friends), but it
does have serious political implications at least in the UK. Also the
rhetorical tactic of labelling (even implicitly) anyone who calls you on
the ideological implications of your 'humour' as 'humourless' betrays an
alarming lack of rigour (qv in other places 'humourless feminist').
I do agree with Peter though - and he was the first person to raise it (I
checked the archives) - that seven pounds an hour is not a very good level
of pay for transcription work.
