Call for Papers
Holiness and Masculinity
12-14 July 2001
Much work has been done over the last decade or so on women and religion,
but as yet little on the gendered nature of masculine piety. We are seeking
papers on from a variety of disciplines or an interdisciplinary approach on
any aspect of holiness and masculinity e.g. conflicts between masculinity
and holiness; construction of masculinity in saints' lives; lay male piety;
clerical masculinity; representation of male holiness. We envision the
possibility of papers addressing non-Christian conceptions of holiness and
masculinity e.g. Jewish, Muslim, Viking, heretical. We are also willing to
accept papers on women 'being masculine'. We welcome papers from any
discipline, broadly focussed on Europe or its close neighbours and within a
chronological range from the late Antique to the eve of the Reformation. We
will be looking for a publisher for a collection from the best papers.
The conference will be held at the University of Huddersfield following
Leeds IMC. Huddersfield lies about 20 miles west of Leeds with good road and
rail connections.
The conference will run from late afternoon on Thursday, 12 July to
Saturday, 14 July. Papers should usually be about 20 minutes, though we
will have some slots for 45 minute papers. We hope to offer 1-2 bursaries
to assist with travel costs for scholars travelling from abroad to give
papers.
Anyone interested in attending can register for our mailing list by sending
their name and address to one of the conference organisers below.
Please send titles and an abstract by 1 Sept 2000 to Dr Patricia Cullum or
Dr Katherine Lewis.
