Dear Michelle
I am somewhat bowled over by the idea of anyone writing
"a comprehensive report on the medieval religious art of Europe"
as it is such a broad topic. There are so many excellent sources. However,
for starters, as I am sure you will receive a mountain of suggestions, you
might first like to read chapters 8 through 14 of:
E H Gombrich - The Story of Art - Phaidon Press 15th edition 1989
Then you could have a look at some of these:
Michael Baxandall - Painting and Experience in 15thc Italy - Oxford
University Press 1988
John Beckwith - Early Medieval Art - Thames & Hudson 1969
Sarah Brown & David O'Connor - Glass-Painters - British Museum Press 1991
Cennino Cennini (trs D V Thompson) - The Craftsman's Handbook - Dover 1954
Charles D Cuttler - Northern Painting from Pucelle to Bruegel - Holt,
Rinehart & Winston,1972
Jill Dunkerton and others - Giotto to Durer - Yale University Press 1991
Emile Male - The Gothic Image, religious art in France of the 13thc -
Westview Press 1972
Theodor Muller -Sculpture in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Spain 1400
to 1500, Penguin Books 1966
Carl Nordenfalk - Book Illumination in the Early Middle Ages - Bookking
International1995
Henk van Os - The Art of Devotion in the Late Middle Ages in Europe
1300-1500 - Merrell Holberton 1994
Nikolaus Pevsner - An outline of European Architecture - Penguin Books 7th
edition 1963 chapters 2 through 5
Wolfgang Stechow - Northern Renaissance Art 1400-1600 Sources and
Documents - Northwestern University Press 1966
Giorgio Vasari (trs L S Maclehose) - Vasari on Technique - Dover 1960
Good luck with your enormous task!
John Hall
