Dear Paula (and reader),
Having waited two days for others to flood lis-maps with suggestions [NB,
Chris F. & Nick M.!] I can offer a couple of items which are held here. It
would be helpful to learn for what purpose(s) the maps are required (the
first one below is rather specific!)
1) 'Gales : average annual number of days with winds of Force 8 or over
(Beaufort Scale)', being plate 9 of series of 10 map plates whose base-map
is entitled 'Europe : climate' , scale 1:10 000 000, compiled by Research
Maps Office, Ministry of Town and Country Planning. The full publication is
entitled : 'Europe : selected climatic factors relevant to structural &
insulation requirements for houses : notes and maps' (London : Ministry of
Town & Country Planning for the Inter-Allied Committee for Physical Planning
& Reconstruction, [1945?])
2) 'I principali tipi isobarici interessanti l'Italia (quinquennio
1926-1930)', maps at scale 1:12 000 000 (Roma : Ufficio Presagi, Ministero
dell'Aeronautica, 1931). Geographical coverage of the 12 map plates is, in
fact, of Europe; and both winds direction and force are depicted.
With possible world requirements, and/or more specifically oceans, several
options present themselves: Admiralty charts (including the 'Miscellaneous'
series for climatic data), US Navy publications, and so on. And how old can
the data be to be acceptable? If nineteenth-century items are OK, more are
available.
Francis (Herbert, that is)
