Dear Margaret,
I have a wonderful book entitled Rings for the Finger, by George Frederick
Kunz, 1917 (Dover Publications, New York), and in it is a very detailed
chapter on the religious use of rings, including much information on papal
rings, rings of archbishops, and of course, rings of both abbots and
abbesses. There are also very detailed, clear drawings of some of these
rings, as well as portraits of abbesses wearing their rings. The book covers
rings from as early as 200 AD.
I would be happy to copy these pages and send them to you, just send me your
mailing address and I'll get them off to you on Monday.

Subject: seals and rings
Greetings! i am hoping that learned members of this list can
provide some information on the prevalence of seals, and or
rings, among priors and/or abbots of monasteries.
As we all know, rings were part of the episcopal insignia;
is this true of abbots as well? (and what about abbesses?)
Presumably the abbot (monastery?) would have some kind of
seal used for validating documents; would this be likely
to be in the form of a ring? If so, have such rings
survived, and are they suitable for daily wear?
thanks,
Margaret Cormack [log in to unmask]
