2000 Field Trip (2nd-9th September 2000): Blueschist metamorphism on
Syros, Cyclades, Greece
Leaders: John Schumacher & John Dixon
BACKGROUND:
On this excursion you will have the opportunity to visit one of the
best localities of high-pressure and low-temperature metamorphic
rocks in Greece. Spectacular examples of blueschist-facies and
transitional eclogite-facies mineralogy are found throughout the
island, which is the type locality of glaucophane (Hausmann, 1845).
One of the places we will visit has been informally named "Lawsonite
Point." There are quite literally thousands of lawsonite/lawsonite
pseudomorphs which range in size from a few mm to several cm. Some of
the lawsonite pseudomorphs are replaced by fine-grained, Cr-bearing
mica which gives them a distinct green color that is in stark
contrast to a paler blue background of glaucophane.
We will also see high-pressure marbles (calcite +/- dolomite) which
contain aragonite pseudomorphs and assemblages composed of
glaucophane, omphacite, garnet and mica.
There are also numerous localities where high-pressure minerals
replace the primary igneous mineralogy, but preserve magmatic
textures (course-grained gabbros, pillows, intrusion breccias and
possibly a magma mixing zone).
COST:
£ 180 (this excludes: travel to and from, beverages and lunch).

TRAVEL:
Syros can be easily reached from the Athens. There are hourly express
busses from the airport to the harbor (Piraeus), and several ferries
daily to Syros. The ferry trip it is about 4-5 hour journey.
Alternatively, Olympic Air flies twice daily to Syros (25 minute
journey). Participants should plan on arriving on Syros on
2.September and departing on 9.September. We will be in the field
from 3 to 8.September.
Anyone interested in participating please e-mail J.C. Schumacher and
pay the deposit by the 25th of July. DO NOT USE YOUR REPLY BUTTON
copy and paste or type my e-mail address
([log in to unmask]) into the "To:" field of your e-mail
program. The number of participants will probably be limited to 12-14.
