Isn't it Christine de Pisan who tells the story of the girl who saves her
mother by breastfeeding her as she languishes in prison ? It's either in
"City of Ladies" or the other one, given as an example of a noble woman. I
also seem to remember that the image of a woman breast feeding a prisoner
through the bars of a prison cell was popular in France during the
Revolution. Not sure what connection, if any, with Our Lady et. al. &
breast-baring but the leit - motif would seem to be Pity so may be there is
some sort of connection.
