Letter to the British Library - May 2000
Thank you for your letter of the 3rd. inst.
I have been given to understand that the Ossulston Street entrance is now closed earlier, than the nondisabled people’s entrance. So this problem has returned.
Bearing in mind that the design of the direct “public” access to the coffee area is in conflict with both Part M of the 1985 Building Act, as well as the Disability Discrimination Act, 1995. The use of the word “irksome” would seem inappropriate, I consider the word “ outrage” to be a more appropriate assessment of the situation.
I cannot accept your statement that any wheelchair could damage any floor in any public building, if the floor surface was up to a reasonable standard..
I think that there is an urgent need for the British Library to seriously consider employing an Equality
officer with a good understanding of the social model
of disability.
Therefore, I feel that we should curtail any serious discussion until after the new Chief Executive is
fully in post.
