I don't have a problem with people asking questions to the list. .. that is
what it is all about.
I do suggest that people who have been on the list for some period of time
consider that if there is a request for a simple 'factual' information (i.e
references about goniometry) then they send the reply to the individual
and ask the individual to summarise the results and repost them as a
summary removing the redundant information. Unless of course one has a
large amount of information on the topic. If I just had one article at hand
that may help then I would post it to the individual. This reflects the
nature of the internet - quick at hand responses. Such behaviour
multiplied by 1000 can lead to something signficiant.
for example Robin reports that he has received many valued replies:
"Many have, and I have thanked them personally as well as
through this medium. Some of those I have not had before - and am thus more
informed by their responses. "
The only thing I am disappointed about is that I did not see the summary of
references etc. but that doesn't seem to be the ethos of this list (unlike
others) so that was not a personal comment about Robin or anyone
subscribing to the list.
One other issue ...about list arguments.
The issue I have is not the context or nature of the argument but the side
line comments of agreement or "hear hear*"
cheers
Garry.
"hear hear" is a term used for agreement with a public speaker. It is
derived from the British system where the opposition party members would
hum as a speaker was trying to make a point. The hum could not be tracked
to anyone individual and was very effective. The supporters would call out
"hear him, hear him" when he finally got around to saying something
important! This has since abbreviated to the "hear hear" . So unless the
list is getting a lot of electrical hum ......
maybe i just need a notch filter:-).
GTA.
