Recently we've all been involved in discussions of Bernini's "Saint
Teresa..." Today I read: "[Julien Green] finds in the works of St John
of the Cross passages which suggest that, as human nature aspires
towards the divine, there is a simultaneous increase in carnal desire.
These passages provide a satisfactory explanation for Green as to why
temptation can be intense at such moments of aspiration towards the
divine" (Michael O'Dwyer, "Julien Green: A Critical Study," Four Courts
Press, 1997).
