I am editing the medieval French lives of St Dominic as part of my doctoral
thesis. In one episode of his Vie, at the Offertory of the Mass, a student
comes forward and kisses Dominic's hand (and is cured of lust). Does anyone
know whether in the Mass in Italy at the beginning of the 13th cent. the
gifts of bread and wine were brought up to the sanctuary (as today) and was
it the custom to kiss a priest's hand when doing so (just as one does today
at a priest's ordination). Or could this young student be taking up the
collection plate (as at Mass today)? I would be grateful if anyone could
offer some advice. My email address is: [log in to unmask]
Many thanks,
John Cochrane
