Swithin, or Swithun, d. 862, was Bishop of Winchester. The popular
belief that the weather on St Swithun's day (15th July) will be that of
the next 40 days may have arisen from a similar attribution to the
feast of SS. Processus and Martinian, which coincides with the
anniversary of Swithun's death. Baring-Gould gives his feast day as
2nd July, the day of his death rather than of his translation.
But as to how he got his name, I leave that to more expert
contributors.
