I seem to recall a British comedy set in/near St. Swithin's...
The Oxford Dictionary of Saints spells it "Swithun." He died in 862.
Here are the bare bones: bishop of Winchester; little is known of him;
educated Ethelwulf; associated with rain (if it rains on St. Swithun's
day, it will rain for 40 days); there are 58 ancient dedications to him
in England and a few in Scandinavia.
Judging by the Latin documents cited as references, his name in Latin
was 2nd declension Swithunus, Swithuni... There is quite a bibliography
devoted to him; let me know if you want them or if you can easily put
your hands on the ODS.
Best,
Kathryn
p.s. None of the references seems to concern the spelling or origin of
his name.
