Here in Reading Borough libraries, we require front line staff to wear name
badges. However to address staff concerns over customers being able to trace
their home address through phone books, staff can opt to have either just
their first name or a fictitious surname on the badge. Name badges contain
no details of a persons "rank on station" within the library service.
The issue of name badges is one of those subjects that provokes strong
feelings among some staff, especially (and understandably) among female
staff. In reality though, for those of us who have been in post for many
years and/ or work in small branches, most of our customers know our names
anyway!
