Janet,
I was beginning to think that this was an issue that no one else had
problems with!!
North Somerset libraries, through having signed up to the local Lifelong
learning plan, are also being encouraged to incorporate the standards of the
guidance council. I am working with our local Careers and training provider
- Learning Partnership West, who have appointed co-ordinators to deal with
the Guidance council Standards. We have met with colleagues from local
colleges, the voluntary sector and employment service, as well as trainers
from the Guidance council.
I have questioned whether libraries need to be full members, and this is
being investigated. The latest info. I had was that we may only need to be
associate members.
If we become full members, staff working in libraries giving information
and/or advice would need to be trained to NVQ level 2 in Info. Advice &
Guidance work. This has significant budgetary implications for a small
unitary authority such as North Somerset! The local co-ordinator believes
that, at present, the authority would be expected to pay for such training.
Essentially, a great deal of the Guidance Council standards are common sense
and certainly reflect the customer service image that this authority wishes
to have.
There is a further local meeting next week, and I hope that some clarity
will then be available about the situation. If there is anything especially
useful, I will e mail you again!

Subject: Quality standards
Apologies if you get this message more than once.
As providers of access to the Internet and to careers / learning
information, we are currently linking in to the local database of local
learning opportunities that links to LearnDirect. (We are also providers of
learning and our courses are listed on the database which is at
www.go-for-it.org.uk)
We are being encouraged to take on board the quality standards for
information providers as laid down by The Guidance Council. Is anyone else
working on this? Is there a national working party for public libraries
involved in this?
Thank you
Janet Swan
