I'm planning an undergraduate survey course on the fantastic in British lit.
I remember reading many mystery plays and being struck by the extreme
strangeness of some of them, both to us and to their contemporary viewers.
By this I mean that the events and characters are very far from the
experiences of everyday life. Does this ring a bell for anyone? What is
the strangest mystery play or other medieval religious play that you can
think of, by any definition of "strange"?
For context, we are reading works such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,
Frankenstein, Orlando, and works by Blake, HG Wells, Sheridan LeFanu, and
many others.
Thank you for your help!
