When I was at Uni we were told it was inadviseable to use electical
stimulation as it interrupted the feedback mechanism which facilitated nerve
growth (plasticity) which was trying to be encouraged. The lecturer in
question referenced an article stateing this which I failed to keep.
I will try to get this reference for you, but as far as I was aware it was
with 2 hemiplegic patient groups both with conventional physiotherapy input
but one half also treated with ES. The second group performed less well on
functional outcome scores. I am not 100%sure of this though.
