Christopher:
Brief Head/Hand misfire in response to your query on
Prodigal Son text groupings. In the Skinnerian maze of allegorical
role assignments, I neglected to include the consequent key point
about Tertullian's decoding of the parable.
While exploring and discussing the convention ( even by his time) of
Jews as elder son and Christians as younger, he ultimately rejected
that reading in favor of the two sons as the 'ignorant pagan' (
younger) and the pharisaic Jew, who resented the coming of the
gentiles ( elder). Both sons had something to learn. ( Not that this
correction, or rather omission, clarifies the entire problem, but I
now feel less the pressure of Tertullian's spirit.)
