Interim Saints - March 19th
JOSEPH (before A.D. 30)
"All we know for certain concerning S. Joseph, the husband of Mary the
mother of God, is derived from the Holy Gospels. To him was confided
the most precious treasure ever entrusted to man, the guardianship of
Mary and Jesus . . ."
PANCHARIUS, martyr (3rd cent.)
Pancharius, a young Christian, well-favoured, and active, having gained
the favour of the emperor Maximian, became his secretary . . . The
emperor urged him to renounce his religion. But as Pancharius refused,
he ordered him to be scourged . . . he was subjected to fresh
interrogation, but maintaining his constancy, was condemned to
execution by the sword.
JOHN, abbot at Cività-di-Penne (4th cent.)
"Now it was the month of December, and according to the custom of the
month, it froze hard, and all the ground was stiff; but the tree under
which the blessed John reposed, blossomed as the lily . . ."
LACTEAN, abbot of Clon-Fert (about A.D. 622)
. . . Lactean founded the abbey of Clonfert, and he died in the odour
of sanctity.
LANDOALD, priest, AMANTIUS, deacon, and ADRIAN, martyr (8th cent.)
Companions of S. Amandus, who is discussed in Richard Fletcher's book,
'The Conversion of Europe.'
ALKMUND, martyr (A.D. 800)
. . . was loved and revered for his spotless innocence and gentleness
in a period of crime and violence . . . S. Alkmund was buried at
Lilleshut, in Shropshire, but his body was afterwards translated to
Derby, and he is honoured as the patron of that town.
It might be of interest if list-members were to contribute articles on
the patron saints of their own towns, particularly if those saints are
little-known outside those towns. I had never heard of St Alkmund, but
presumably he is a big man in Derby; Frideswide is not hugely known
outside Oxford; here in York, St William is a local saint little-known
outside the ring road. Any takers?
Oriens.
