It depends on what you mean by intermediary state, I
think. The tablets were around a long time before we
have evidence for codices, and a long, long time
after. There is even evidence in the ancient world
for parchment notebooks. So by "intermediary step" do
you mean a step in the evolution or development of the
codex, or do you mean that a point on the spectrum
between papyrus roll and parchment codex us tg\he
pinkas?
