In Book II of the Didascalion, Hugh of St. Victor discusses the "mechanical
arts," as you put them, along with the liberal arts. He points to the
virtue and necessity of crafts like arms making and so on, but it seems to
me he considers them distinct from and ultimately inferior to the liberal
arts.
