The classic place to start would be F. Pollock & F.
W.Maitland _The History of English Law_ 2nd ed., 2 vols, Cambridge, 1923.
A more recent and probably more readable place to look would be
J. Hudson, _The Formation of the English Common Law; Law and Society n
England from the Norman Conquest to Magna Carta_ London, 1996. [this
provides an excellent review of the debates about , well, this subject! And
it is certainly one of the most up to date discussions of the formation of
the English Common Law]
One other thing that could get added
R.C. van Caenegem _The Birth of the English Common Law_ 2nd ed., Cambridge,
1988.
Hope you can make use of this...

Subject: Angevin legal reforms
I know this is outside the tone of the list but I thought I would ask
anyway. Can some one point me in the direction of an introductory source
on the Angevin legal reforms in England in the 1170s and 1180s? I am
reading a text at the moment which mentions them but goes into no detail
whatsoever.
Thanks,
