Dear Joseph,
Not really my bailiwick, but you might look at Antonia Gransden, "The
Growth of the Glastonbury Traditions and Legends in the 12th
Century," Journal of Ecclesiastical History, vol. 27 (1976),
337-358, or her Legends, Traditions and History in Medieval England
(London, 1992). However, according to Malcolm Thurlby, "The Lady
Chapel of Glastonbury Abbey," The Antiquaries Journal, vol. 75
(1990), 107-170, the association of Joseph of Arimathea with the
Vetusta Ecclesia only goes back to a 13th-century interpolation in
William of Malmesbury's De Antiquitate Glastonie Ecclesie.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
