Paul VI removed from the calendar saints for whose existence (e.g. that of
George) evidence seemed insufficient. Aside from that act, I recall the
announcement that Philomena did not exist. The story was around in my
undergraduate years (early 60's) that Cardinal Cushing was on his way to
dedicate a church to Philomena when the word reached him, causing a rapid
replanning of the ceremony for that church.
