Bidding culture and local government research.
---------------------------------------------------
Dear all,
As finding and maintaining funding for services is a subject close to
many of our hearts, you may be interested to learn of new research being
undertaken by The Information Management Research Institute (IMRI).
IMRI, of the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, are to investigate
the effects of the 'bidding culture' within local government on public
library, museum and archive service provision.
Sandra Parker (School of Information Studies) and Dr. Ken Harrop
(Division of Government and Politics) of Northumbria have been
successful in securing a grant of £83,647 from the LIC, shortly to
become MLAC. This funding will be used to investigate the 'bidding
culture' within local government, and the resultant effects on the
development of public libraries, museums and archive services in England
and Wales. It is proposed that this significant and timely research will
contribute to a major DCMS review on the funding of museums, libraries
and archives scheduled to begin in April 2001.
The programme of research will be conducted over 14 months by staff from
the Information Management Research Institute within the School of
Information Studies at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, who
have wide experience of the sector and strong links with the Public
Library Network and Information North. It will also involve staff from
the Division of Government and Politics at Northumbria who have
established expertise in Local Government policy making.
Any comments from fellow list members with experience or opinions of bid
tendering are most welcome. Please note that expanded version of this
news item can be found as an attachment of this message. Finally, if you
are further interested in the scope of this research, or would like to
contribute, please e-mail either Sandra Parker ([log in to unmask])
or Graham Coulson ([log in to unmask])
