The following is information for those libraries who buy business products for
their services.
Some of you might know that Extel card information is now delivered via another
company called Synergy Systems and is available on their Sequencer CD product.
We bought this for a year's subscription over a year ago with some European
funding. As money is tight we have asked to cancel but have been told we can
only do this if we give six months notice in writing. We were not made aware of
this clause by any sales people when we took on the product and indeed have
never heard of such a procedure from any other supplier we have dealt with over
the years. Despite the best efforts of our City Legal Services Department we
were unable to get out of this agreement and consequently are stuck with a six
month bill for

£6,500 for something we cannot make full use of. The fact that
other Libraries in the U.K. have been charged different prices for the same
product is normal practice in this field although our price was a bit steep.
And the moral of the story, as I expect you have guessed, is always read the
smallest of small print on the final contract which could differ significantly
from any discussions or documents seen before.
