POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS IN RUSSIAN STUDIES
CENTRE FOR RUSSIAN STUDIES
SCHOOL OF SLAVONIC AND EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
TWO postgraduate scholarships, tenable from September 2000 for three years,
for research topics leading to the degree of PhD.
The Centre for Russian Studies draws together the varied disciplinary
expertise within SSEES (over 20 academic staff and more than two dozen
research postgraduates as well as 50 plus MA students) to provide a forum
and focus for academic work at postgraduate level and above. Successful
applicants will be attached to the Centre, and, more specifically, will
undertake research on a topic within the general framework of Professor
Geoffrey Hosking's current project, and will be supervised by him.
Professor Hosking has received a personal Leverhulme Research Professorship
to enable him to continue his work on nation-building and state-building in
the Soviet Union and its successor states, and on the relationship between
the Russian people and the state formations under which they have lived
since 1917. As such the project represents a sequel to his recently
published book, Russia: People and Empire, 1552-1917. The work is
historical in its overall methodology, but will make use of social science
theory in the fields of nation-building and state-building.
The following subjects are likely to be of especial importance in the
development of the research: (i) the armed forces; (ii) education; (iii)
ideology; (iv) literature and high culture; (v) popular culture; (vi)
demography and settlement patterns; (vii) relations between Russians and
non-Russians; (viii) religion and the Orthodox Church. Depending upon the
topic, a successful applicant may receive joint supervision from a relevant
expert from within the Centre.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified students who wish to
undertake research leading to a PhD on a topic within the framework
outlined above.
Successful applicants will be expected to take part in a regular research
student seminar on 'The Russian People and the Soviet Union', by reporting
on their own work and discussing the equivalent work of other participants.
THE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships will be worth not less than £2000 p.a. and not more than £5000
p.a. and are tenable for three years. They must be taken up in 2000-2001.
ELIGIBILITY
The scholarships are open to all students, whether from the UK, the
European Union or any other country.
They may be held in tandem with other scholarships and studentships
including ORS awards, except in the case of major awards that cover the
full cost of fees and provide a maintenance allowance.
