Do you mean that the Reformers thought it sad that the wishes of the
people who actually worshiped in the churches counted for so little?
Well, what about the English Reformers who, against strong opposition
from parishioners whose ancestors had contributed the "fabric" of the
church, ordered it all destroyed, as documented by Eamon Duffy in _The
Stripping of the Altars_? My understanding is that it was understood
in the Middle Ages generally that the "fabric" of the church belonged
to the parishioners.
