Browsing files on my PC I found these notes. Not certain of the source so take
with a pinch of salt (pardon the pun!)
Side effects/cautions to be considered when using creatine.
--Nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, weakness, and diarrhea are the most common side
effects, typically occurring with dosages greater than 5g a day.
--Creatine supplementation may cause electrolyte imbalance -- a disruption of the
calcium-phosphorus ratio in the muscle that could potentially interfere with the
muscle's contraction/relaxation mechanisms. As a result, the muscle may
contract/shorten when it's supposed to relax/stretch or vice versa. This may cause
tetanic muscle cramping and muscle strains. This electrolyte imbalance may also
predispose athletes to dehydration and heat-related illness.
--Long-term scientific studies on creatine are not yet available. It is possible that
long-term use may put stress on the kidneys.
--Creatine is not regulated by the FDA, so product quality/purity may be suspect and
vary among manufacturers.
I have used creatine in athletes and not seen any side-effects but my number is small.
