I don't know if I have shared my own recipe before for energy/protein bars
that are widely used by athletes - if so, forgive me. I have tried numerous
commercial bars and found that most of them taste rather foul. The only
reason one forces then down instead of throwing them away is that you paid a
lot for the privilege! Actually, the worst part of it all is that you are
paying a fortune for this toxic brew - it costs manufacturers less than 10
cents to make large bar and they sell it for at least 10 times that.
Here is the recipe (alter the proportions to suit your taste):
Crunchy peanut butter (pure, without hydrogenated oils) or sesame tahini
Honey
Skim milk powder (and/or whey)
Sunflower seeds
Stir well until it forms a fairly solid mass. Adding more milk powder tends
to make a more solid mixture. If you don't tolerate milk well, then
substitute something like soya flour or other suitable protein powder.
Optional Extras
Chopped nuts (choose your favourites)
Creatine (small amount if wanted)
Raisins (or similar dried fruit)
Ingredient X (suggestions from readers)
If you wish to make it into bars, then you simply wrap it in rice paper and
refrigerate. I don't bother to go to the trouble. Just place the mixture in a
suitable small plastic container, keep it refrigerated and scoop it out
whenever you need some. You will eventually concoct your own variation that
is much tastier than any commercial bars and you will save a fortune in the
process - especially if you have large family or hungry teenage athlete at
home!
Happy munching!
