Susan:
>For a literary cultivation of that very image of ecclesia as hortus
>conclusus, you might look at:
Hymni de Paradiso of Ephraem Syrus.
Especially HYMN VI ( the correspondence of the Church to Paradise and
the differing aspects of that correspondence);
and possibly the series IX-XI, (on the Joys of Paradise)
There is an translation of the Hymns of Paradise , with intr. by
Sebastian Brock. SVS Press, Crestwood; New York 1990.
Hope this helps;
You might also examine the liturgical texts for the Vigil__
Vespers and Matins___ ( especially the Canon and Stikhera from
Matins) for the Sunday of the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from
Paradise,( the Sunday before the beginning of the Great fast,) as
contained in the Lenten Triodion ( a collection of liturgical texts
for the daily Lenten Offices from the Preparatory Sundays of Lent
through the Midnight Office of Holy Saturday). This theme dominates
that later portion of Matinal texts. An English translation is
available: London: Faber and Faber, 1978. transl, Kallistos Ware and
Mother Mary.
