I doubt very much that the head is Roman. Black terracotta is not
unusual in Pre-Columbian artifacts, but most Roman pottery heads are
red or buff. From an art-historical perspective, attributions that are
unsupported by a likely provenance, and based on a single example at
that, are risky to say the least. If the "expert" was familiar with
Roman art, then perhaps they would not know if it was pre-Columbian,
and if they were expert in Pre-Columbian art, then would they also be
able to give a knowledgeable attribution to a Roman object? I am also
suspicious that no photograph was provided. Perhaps we have a Barry
Fell wannabe here ;-) but I wonder why they didn't attempt to
attribute it as Etruscan bucchero ware if they wanted an old world
origin?
