Dear Jennifer,
I know as next to nothing about the 13th century glass at Chartres (much less
Bourges) as could be and still lay some slight claim to viable consciousness,
but a good place to start on any Chartres topic is Jan van der Meulen's
massive bibliography, _Chartres: sources and literary interpretation: a
critical bibliography_, Boston, Mass.: G.K. Hall, 1989.
For the glass, the touchstone work remains, even today, that of the learned
Canon Yves Delaporte, _Les vitraux de la cathédrale de Chartres, histoire et
description_, Chartres: É. Houvet, 1926. (1 vol. of text, two or three of
plates)
More specifically, I seem to recall an important article on the style of some
windows at both Chartres and Bourges by the late French art
historian and glass specialist, Louis Grodecki.... but I cannot, alas,
remember where it was published (early 60's?) and don't have my van der Meulen
with me here in Lotus Land.
Eventually the authoritative work on the Chartres windows will be put together
by Jim Bugslag and that on Bourges, perhaps, by Richard Schneider. Some few
of us may live to see such a happy day.
Best of luck,
Christopher
