One of the earliest set of divisions, which I believe was originally proposed
in the Seventeeth century, has ancient history ending with the fall of Rome
and modern history beginning with the Renaissance. the period in between is
the middle ages.
Think of the divisions and subdivisions as what the artificial intelligence
people call fuzzy categories. People didn't get together en masse and decide
to end the middle ages on a certain Tuesday evening. Instead, the labels were
retrofitted to the events, awkwardly in some cases.
